When father was awake he would give us a penny. To leave him in piece (sic). We couldn't tell him we liked to be with him.

Some days he would give us the penny, and we would go down the hill to the store, and buy a gumball, and chew it for days. I kept the penny and the gumball. Today I found them in the big room. Someone has been playing with my things.

One day he gave us a nickel. We thought we should go further away. The store didn't have a gumball machine for nickels. We walked a long time. I took our shoes off after some time. It was hot. I was scared. I don't remember after that.
